Scouts One Step Closer to First Class

Four intrepid scouts gathered on a rainy afternoon for a nature walk through Bedford's York Conservation Area. Each scout identified ten species of plant or wildlife. It was just one step on scouting's trail to First Class. But it was also a way to unplug from electronic devices and recharge their natural batteries on fresh air and liquid sunshine. Some of highlights were discovering salamanders just about everywhere in the leafy forest floor, the exposed root ball of a large fallen tree, a log being chewed to sawdust by carpenter ants, and holes left in tree trunks by woodpeckers searching for tasty insects.
