BSA Swim Test and First Class Water Rescue
Post date: Apr 8, 2015 2:29:08 PM
We will have swim testing and water rescue training events on 11-April (2:30-5pm) and 25-April (2:30-5pm).
Safety First! The BSA Swimmer Test is required for the upcoming Whitewater Rafting activity (1-May) and for the Seabase High-Adventure trip this August. Also, we want all scouts participating in Seabase to have their First Class rank, so we will also address the following First Class Rank Requirements:
Please prepare and/or review the videos at the links below.
9b. Successfully complete the BSA swimmer test.*
9c. With a helper and a practice victim, show a line rescue both as tender and as rescuer.
BSA Swim Test
Jump feet first into water over the head, level off, and begin swimming.
Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: side, breast, trudgen, or crawl. Swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke.
The 100 yards must be completed without stops and must include at least one sharp turn.
Rest by floating…Long enough to demonstrate ability to rest when exhausted.
*If a Boy Scout or adult went to summer camp in 2014 and passed the BSA swimmer test then that satisfies the requirement. If you plan to attend this Saturday, then let me know by Thursday this week. We will meet at my home (address below) at 2:30pm on 11-April, and take one minivan to the Hanscom AF Base Pool. (They are expecting us at 3pm).
Many thanks to Norm Heckman and Jeremy Eberhart for helping with these tests!
