Troop 114 Basic Dinner Ideas

Main Course Pick from one of the following
Chicken Nuggets

Rice

Peas (other veg)

Sliced apple

Buy chicken tenders and “shake and bake”. The nuggets are easy to make in a Dutch oven or you can use a foil pouch on a grill. Rice & peas (or other veg) just require boiling water. The peach cobbler can be made in a Dutch oven as well.
Shish-Kabob

Rice

Lettuce & tomato salad

Check out page 280 of your handbook. Cube the meat at home and pack in zip-lock bags. Bring wooden skewers. You may marinate the meat if you wish (some stores sell meat already prepared). Also bring small onions, small tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables you like. I like to make separate vegetable and meat skewers to better control the cooking. Rice just requires boiling water. Remember to wash your lettuce.
Sausage, onions & peppers

Rolls

Lettuce & tomato salad

Just like at the ballpark. Slice onions and peppers at home and put in a zip-lock bag. Cook in a pan with a little oil or in a Dutch oven. You can cook the sausage in the same pan or grill it. Try toasting the rolls on the grill also.
Sloppy-Joe or Chili

Elbow macaroni

Sliced fruit

Buy sloppy-joe or chili mix in spice section of supermarket. Directions are on the back. Cook hamburger in a pan or Dutch oven. If you are short on time, brown the meat at home. Serve on top of elbow macaroni. Slice an apple, pear or other fruit that you like.
Hamburgers

Buns

Baked potatoes

Corn

Hamburgers on the grill are easy. Cook potatoes by wrapping in foil and putting on the coals. I like new potatoes with a bit of oil, onion, garlic and spice. Try other vegetables in foil in the coals – zucchini works well this way. Corn can be cooked on coals as well or on the grill. As an alternative, you can boil it.
One Pot Stew

Egg Noodles (or macaroni)

Lettuce & tomato salad

Try the recipe on page 270 of your handbook and serve over egg noodles. You can use a pot on the stove or the Dutch oven. I like chicken, peppers, onions & mushrooms and spaghetti sauce. Cube chicken and cook in Dutch oven with some oil and spice, set aside. Cook vegetables in Dutch oven the same way, set aside. Mix chicken & vegetables, put back in Dutch oven, add spaghetti sauce and let cook with cover on for and additional 30 minutes. Serve over egg noodles.
Add DrinkBring milk, chocolate milk, lemonade or kool-aid.
Add DessertBring cookies, brownies, chocolate (half bar per serving), peach cobbler or instant lemon pudding. There are great desserts that you can make in the Dutch oven.
